What length of lesson do I need?
Beginners start at a 45 minute private weekly lesson. Students move up to a 60 minute lesson when they reach Level 5 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM).
Where are lessons held?
At my in home studio at 224 Orchard Crescent in Whitmore Park in South Regina.
Do I need a piano at home?
Yes, you will need an instrument at home for practise - well-maintained acoustic piano or a full size digital piano with touch sensitive, weighted keys. I can point you in the right direction to find one.
How much practise is necessary?
The amount of practise depends on the age and level of the student, and as well how fast they want to progress. The most important thing is that it happens a minimum of 5 times a week and that assignments are completed. Parents will need to help younger students with their practising.
This is generally how long students should practise, although it can vary with each student:
What books will I need and where do I purchase them?
I will let you know what books are needed and they can be purchased at Long and McQuade at 1445 Dewdney Avenue, 306-569-8501 or on various websites. You are responsible for these costs. Books for a beginning student would likely run around $40. Students should also have a bag to carry and store their music books in.
What's the youngest age you will teach?
Usually the youngest student I will start is 5 years old.
Do you teach adults?
Yes! Adult lessons are scheduled during weekday morning and early afternoons.
Do you offer group lessons?
No, I feel one on one lessons offer the best experience for students, allowing them to learn at their own pace and receive lessons tailored specifically to them.
How is tuition collected?
Tuition is calculated by finding the tuition amount for the entire year, divided by ten and rounded off to the nearest dollar to create an equal monthly payment. Tuition is paid by post-dated cheques, dated for the first of each month from September to June. There is a $40 registration fee due at time of registration.
Do lessons run all year?
We have a three week break at Christmas, a one week break in February, and a little over a week off at Easter. Summer Break is ten weeks. There is an optional Piano Boot Camp the week before lessons resume in the fall, for students who would like take part in a fun review session.
When do students get to perform?
We will have one or two studio recitals a year. There will also be opportunities for Performance Classes for older students and Studio Parties for younger students. Students are also welcome to participate in the Registered Music Teachers Association Recitals, the Da Capo Masterclass and the Contemporary Showcase for more performing experience.
Do all students do exams?
Most students do some RCM exams, however they are not required. They can provide valuable feedback and be very motivating for some students. RCM exams can be taken in January, March or June.
